Your experience in the Usambaras
starts with us...

Usambara Eco Tours arranges a variety of hikes, walks and Safaris in the region, showcasing the natural beauty, rich history, and cultural heritage of the Usambara Mountains. We also organize taxi transfers, mountain bike and motorcycle (boda boda) rentals, bus tickets, and overnight stays at carefully selected lodges, homestays, hotels, and even convents—ensuring your visit is as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Upon request, we create personalized itineraries led by experienced local guides. From our base in Mtae—or any location of your choice—you can explore a wide range of unique and memorable excursions throughout the Usambaras.

Enjoy birdwatching and search for the rare Taita Falcon nesting along the cliffs. Hike to the ancient Mambo Caves and discover prehistoric footprints. Walk through the Shagayu Rainforest, home to towering trees, waterfalls, and remarkable biodiversity. Descend to Ndungu Lake, where tranquil rice fields are alive with monkeys and birdlife. You can also take a safari to Mkomazi National Park, one of Tanzania’s newest and most diverse wildlife reserves.

The climate is pleasantly temperate—though evenings can be cool—making it ideal for hiking. The Usambara Mountains also provide excellent altitude conditions for acclimatization before climbing Mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru.

All hikes can be tailored in length and difficulty to suit your physical condition, expectations, or specific needs. Many guests also enjoy time for relaxation, meditation, or even a yoga session. You may visit a local football pitch and join a friendly game, take in breathtaking views, or watch unforgettable sunsets from the cliffs above the villages.

You can also meet local artisans, visit traditional healers, explore vibrant weekly markets, or simply enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee in a village café.
